Kai Wen is a third-year mass communication student from the Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of Film and Media Studies.
Photography to him is not just a hobby, but also a tool to interact with others – to understand human nature and record the best of each individual.
Freezing moments of time, photography helps to capture snippets of the world around him, and he hopes to share these with others to show them a different perspective of life.
From shooting nature to abstract photography, Kai Wen has since gone on to record not just events, but instead the lives of individuals to tell stories through his photographs and documentaries.
Kai Wen is currently the Photo Editor at m:idea, the media conglomerate at the School of Film and Media Studies. He manages photographers for all campus publications, and his photographic works regularly appear on Lianhe Zaobao, Friday Weekly, Thumbs Up, and Omy.sg.
He has always wondered what plans God had for him. He had no idea where he wanted to go, or what he wanted to do. God has reminded him through these verses, slowly through the years:
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Psalm 33:11
But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.
Proverbs 16:3
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.
Proverbs 16:9
In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.
He has decided in my heart what he wants to do.
He wants to serve God with photography. He wants to show the world how weak man can be, and how we must rely on God for strength and comfort. He has found a way to do it.
By God's grace, he has found sponsors willing to pay for full travel expenses for going round developing countries to make photographs of the plight of the poor. He wants to show the developed world the other dimension of Earth, and use his photographs to spread God's love. He wants to show how weak mankind is as compared to God, and how we must turn to Him for eternal life.
(That of course means he will sacrifice a comfortable life which he can easily lead in Singapore if he continues his job in the Singapore Press Holdings as a photojournalist)
